A Kidney Vetch Corridor
A corridor of Kidney Vetch stretching from Dundee in the south to Montrose in the north was strengthened today. With the help of Glyn Edwards and his wife Jane from Butterfly Conservation Scotland we braved the hail and snow to plant new areas of Vetch between East Haven and Carnoustie. You will remember that we planted Vetch in East Haven last year to provide food for Britain's smallest butterfly. However, the Small Blue does not fly very far and as Vetch is the sole larval foodplant it is necessary to increase the number of sites along the coast to enable it to spread. We have created a Kidney Vetch trail and will be out and about watering plants over the next few weeks to ensure that they thrive. Find out more about this rare butterfly on our Small Blue page.
